How to set up a Jira account and create your first project

Go to the Jira website (https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/pricing) and click on the “Get it free” button. 

Follow the prompts to create a new account and select the appropriate pricing plan for your team. Jira is free for up to 10 users. But if you would like to start from my site, they suggest a 30-day Jira Cloud trial. It isn’t the best idea if you just want to check how Jira works and maybe stay for a longer time.

It’s also a good idea to select “Confluence” as a second product because Jira and Confluence are very powerful tools together.

Then, you will be asked about your email address and name. You will need to confirm your email address, and when you click on the confirmation link, the last step is creating your team page in the Atlassian environment. Then, they ask you a few questions, and boom, you can set up your first project in Jira.  

On the “Create a project” page, you will be asked to choose a project template. Select the template that best fits your project needs, and then click “Next.” 

On the next page, you will be asked to enter the name and key of your project, as well as other details such as the project’s description and lead. Enter this information and click “Create.” 

Once your project is created, you can start adding issues, setting up workflows and reporting, and inviting team members to join the project.

Note: If you are setting up a Jira instance for an organization, you may need to perform additional setup steps such as configuring user roles and permissions, customizing fields and tags, and integrating with other tools. Consult the Jira documentation for more information on these advanced setup steps.

  • Issues: The issues page is where you can view, create, and manage all the issues in your projects. You can use the filters and search tools to find specific issues, and you can also use the Agile boards to view and organize issues in Scrum or Kanban style. 
  • Boards: The board’s page is where you can view and manage your agile boards, which are used to track the progress of your work in Scrum or Kanban style. You can create multiple boards for different projects or teams, and you can customize the columns and swimlanes to suit your needs. 
  • Reports: The reports page allows you to access various built-in reports and charts and create custom reports and dashboards. You can use these reports to track the progress of your work, identify trends and patterns, and analyze performance. 
  • Administration: The administration page is where you can access the advanced configuration options for Jira, such as user management, field customization, and integration with other tools. This page is only accessible to users with administrative permissions. 

How to create and manage issues in Jira

Jira is designed to help teams plan, track, and manage their work by creating and managing issues. Here are the steps for creating and managing issues in Jira:

On the “Create issue” page, select the project and issue type, and enter the issue summary and description. You can also assign the issue to a team member, set a priority, and add tags or other custom fields as needed. 

Once you have created the issue, it will appear on the issues page, where you can view and manage it. 

To update an issue’s status or progress, click on it and use the “More” menu to select the appropriate action. For example, you can mark an issue as “In progress,” “Resolved,” or “Closed,” depending on its current status. 

To add comments or attachments to an issue, click on the issue and use the “Comment” or “Attach files” buttons. You can also use the “Activity” tab to view a history of all the updates and comments made on the issue. 

To view and organize your issues, you can use the filters and search tools on the issues page, or you can use the Agile boards to view and organize your issues in Scrum or Kanban style.
